The Kootenay River starts in Canadian Rockies in the southeastern corner of British Columbia and flows into Montana and Idaho before returning to BC and joining the Columbia River. Near its start, the river actually passes within 2 km (1.2 mi) of Columbia Lake (the headwaters of the Columbia River) but doesn't actually meet the mighty Columbia until some 700 km (430 mi) later.
The Bull River is situated in the Columbia Valley of southeastern BC and is joins the Kootenay River east of Cranbrook. The river, which originates near the Continental Divide in the Rocky Mountains between Fernie and Cranbrook, is approximately 115 km (70 mi) long and is a popular river for fishing and rafting.
Originating high in the Purcell Mountains of British Columbia, the St. Mary flows eastward until it empties into Kootenay River. Just outside of Kimberley, BC, the river pools into St. Mary Lake. Below St. Mary Lake the river is joined by several tributaries, each adding significantly to the St. Mary's flow before converging with Kootenay River.
